Brian Boru was born in what is now Killaloe, County Clare, in around the year 940 AD. His father, who was king of Thomand, was killed by the Vikings. When Brian's eldest brother died, Brian became King of Thomand, and then of all Munster. In 1002 Brian became High King of all Ireland. He fought against the Vikings all of his life and finally defeated them at the battle of Clontarf in 1014. Brian was then aged 73 and he stayed in his tent praying. When the battle was over a Viking entered his tent and killed him.
