Fact File
Vikings had shields, swords, battle-axes.
On their heads they wore helmets - with an iron nose-piece to protect the front of the face. For ceremonies they wore great horns on top of the helmets.
Some Vikings wore 'coats of mail' - rather like a coat knitted from metal string. These were very heavy and awkward to wear, but they could save a life.
