Fact File
During World War II de Valera, who was the leader of Ireland at the time, decided that Ireland would not join in the war, but would remain neutral, like Switzerland. This meant that Ireland had fears that they might be invaded by either the British and their allies, or else the Germans. A lot of food was quite short, like sweets, and later on in the war Ireland suffered from food shortages as much as the British. Farm incomes were very low during that time as the farmers had been used to selling their cattle to England.
