In June 1940 A fleet of 41 destroyers, together with sloops, minesweepers, transports, and patrol craft, and many small pleasure boats and yachts were sent over to rescue the British soldiers from Dunkirk. Almost miraculously, by June 4, 338,226 British, French, and Belgian soldiers had been evacuated to England, at a cost of 6 destroyers sunk and 19 damaged, not to mention many other smaller vessels.
