If you don't know how to play chess, the best way to learn is to buy a chessboard and pieces and practise setting up the pieces on the board. (the illustration on page 103 will help you). After that, it's probably best to get someone to teach you the moves. I think it's hard to learn chess from a book. I usually teach chess by first teaching people how to capture their opponent's pieces and then teaching how to checkmate with a queen and a rook.
