Fact File

Prices:
Tabitha's doll would have cost about ten pounds. In today's money that would be equivalent to about £500.
(Money is worth about fifty times more now.)

In chapter 6 the steward tells Kitty that some of the passengers are paying as much as £850 for a suite of rooms on the Titanic. The third class passengers are paying only £9 for their ticket to New York.

Explore...!

Ask your grandparents or any elderly person that you know about the price of sweets or toys when they were young. Make a list and see the differences.

Imagine......!

Imagine that you have come from a poor family and have paid your nine pounds for a third class ticket to New York. What would strike you about the Titanic?

Imagine going to a toy shop to choose a doll like Tabitha's doll (about five hundred pounds, remember). Write a description of the doll.

Imagine that you go back in time and you meet Robert. Tell him what your favourite toys are now in the year 2001.
