Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812, and spent most of his childhood in London and Kent, both of which appear frequently in his novels. He started school at the age of nine, but his education was interrupted when his father was imprisoned for debt in 1824. He grew up to be a very famous novelist, but was always concerned for the poor. He died in 1870 when he was fifty eight years old. Among his most famous books are David Copperfield, Bleak House, Our Mutual Friend, Hard Times & Oliver Twist.
