In 1798 more French troops, led by General Humbert arrived in Ireland. They landed in Killala Bay in Mayo on August 24 1798. They were very successful in the beginning and they captured Castlebar and then went on to Tuam. unfortunately, when they reached County Longford, the French were defeated and taken prisoner and sent back to France. No mercy was shown to the Irish and they were tortured and killed.
