Fact File

Wolfe Tone was born in 1763. He was a Protestant, but he pitied the Irish Catholics and he was interested in the ideas of the French Revolution.
He believed the Irishmen of all religions - Catholic, Protestant, Presbyterian should not disagree, but should become
United Irishmen.
He organised troops to come from France to fight the English in Ireland. In December 1796 he arrived at Bantry Bay with 15,000 French men, but it was a failure due to stormy weather.
