In Gaelic Ireland, that is until the sixteenth century in the west of Ireland, most people had their children foster.
A girl was fostered until she was fourteen.
A boy was fostered until he was eighteen.
A foster parent trained the child in the duties that s/he would have when grown up such as managing a household, sword play, playing chess, doing the work of a smith etc.
