Fact File

An Iron Age fort was excavated on the Burren in County Clare and many spindles were found which showed that the Celts spun wool even in cattle country.
Over their tunic Celtic men wore a short woollen cloak ( sometimes a short leather coat) and woollen trousers which fitted their legs closely and which were usually woven in different colours rather like a Scottish plaid with checks and stripes. Women wore a longer tunic with a cloak over it, as well.

Explore...!

Try making a little loom for yourself as is described on page 61 of 'Nuala and her Secret Wolf'.
You will need four sticks tied firmly at the corners and two different colours of wool.

Imagine......!

Imagine that you are having new clothes for a Celtic festival. Write a description of what they look like and how they were made.

Imagine that you are taken back in time into the first century BC and you become friends with Nuala. Write a story about it and say what she would find strange about your clothes?
