Eleventh Century AD

Fact FileThe first Vikings came from Norway, and later on they came from Denmark. They left their country to raid and to acquire land in other countries. Their first raids on the Irish coast occurred in the ninth century. They created strong harbours for their ships and these harbours eventually became towns such as Dublin, Wexford, Cork and Limerick. They also raided many monasteries and churches over the whole of Ireland. They came to the Isle of Man around the year 900 AD. The Vikings had great skill in making boats. They were the first to use overlapping planks of thin wood in the sides of the boat and this meant that the boats could be narrow at the prow and the stern and so made better progress through the seas and the rivers. |
