Message:Katie: I think history can be very exciting. You like the Drumshee books, so you must like history.
Kristine: It's quite hard to find out about your ancestors in Ireland as in 1921 the Custom House in Dublin was burned down and all the records, such as the early census forms were destroyed.
Bradley: That is a great fantasy story. I look forward to the rest of it.

Message:Cora: I've spent all day on Ancestry sites looking for my ancestors...it's really interesting! I've had no luck yet but I've found some people with my surname on famine ship passage lists, so I'm going to try and see if I'm related to any of them.

Message:Katie: I liked school and my favourite subjects were probably English and History.
We have this arrangement for the site management to just put messages on (rather than have them appear immediately) because of the huge amount of spam that is around.

Message:Cora: I decided to take your advice on putting the past into a different chapter, and I'm going to do a few more chapters in the past before I return to the present - just to portray the kind of character Emilia actually was, not the kind of character Paige thought she would be.

Message:Kristine: I;m glad you showed your mum the email. I thought you would, but I just felt that I should mention it.
By the way, I think it is a great compliment to your writing abilities that the woman thought it was a real story.
I've just put your chapter three on the Story Board, and I think it is excellent.

Message:Kristine: The best stories are always made up - real life is often quite boring and that's why I love making up stories.
do be a bit careful about putting your email address on the Internet - this woman may be genuine, but others may not. Have you shown the email to your mother? I would, if I were you.

Karina: I am so hopeless at doing anything with my hands so I admire you for starting again.

Kristine: My children's books range from 28,000 words to 32,000 words and "My Lady Judge" for adults is 90,000 words - and that looks like quite a big book from the book proof copy which I got. I'll have to wait until April to see the real thing, but it will be over 300 pages long.

Message:Cora: I'm sorry for sending in two messages but I forgot to include this question in my last message. I heard you need 150,000 words to write a novel. Is this how many you have in your books, or do you use less then that?

Message:Cora: About a year ago I put a ghost story up on website. I added it as a non fiction story when I actually I made it up. Then today I got an email from a woman saying she might want to use some of the story in a non fiction book she's writing about psychic children. I told her that the story was actually made-up, and I haven't got a reply from her. I don't think she'll use the story, because it's fiction, but I'm actually really happy to be asked anyway. I have a feeling things are looking up with my writing. I just thought you'd like to know.

Message:Kristine: I forgot to say that my book for adults , 'My Lady Judge', will come out on May 4 (or thereabouts) and, yes, it should be available from Easons, though it is published by an English publisher, Macmillan.

Name: Cora Harrison
Message: Karina: I was just thinking that the story of Colonel Blood and the crown jewels would make a great story to write. You should try it some time. The Bloods had a house near here, Applevale House, and I used the ruins of it when I wrote 'Drumshee Rebels'

Kristine: It's easy to lengthen a chapter if you put in some few lines of description between the conversation, or else describe what one of the characters is thinking or a bird singing or the sound of the wind, or something like that. It often gives pace to a story. Think of it as trying to put the reader into the scen you are describing.

Katie: Your Oscar is probably about the size of my Oscar's head: he is a huge dog and weighs about 65 kg - without an trace of fat.

Message:Cora: I sometimes put a thousand words, maybe less if I'm tired. But I'll aim for 2000 words now. The reason I asked is that I was never sure how long to make chapters and then I thought that I had always found yours to be a nice lenght so I thought I'd ask.
Also, another question...I'd like to get your new book for my aunt. Is is availiable yet and if so where can I get it? Would it be availiabe in places like Eason's?

Message:Kristine: That is a very interesting question and you will find that there is no easy answer to it. Some of the best writers just make chapters any length that they wish - sometimes just a page whereas someone like myself tries to make chapters roughly even.
Just to say what I do - and that doesn't mean that you should do it - I make chapters for my children's books about two thousand words, and chapters for adult books about four thousand words. But, having said, that, I do find that in some of my books recently I have some chapters of six thousand words, and then others of only three thousand words.
I think that the best advice is to put a chapter break whenever you think that story is taking a new turn.
