Message: | Part 2 of advice You have two choices - either she still believes in fairies - more strongly than ever - er else she gives up believing in them. In both cases, the main part of the story has to be about what happens to her belief. So, either you have to have something happen that shows she was right all along - perhaps involving a couple of her friends so that they, too, believe in fairies by the end of the story. Or else you have something happen that changes her belief and leaves her feeling - perhaps disappointed - perhaps more grown-up. Does this help?

Message: | Amber: I got the beginning of the story which you sent. Well, here's my advice: You've got your main character, and you've got her problem - what you need to do next is to sort out what kind of ending do you want to have.

Message: | Sarah: What about a Christmas story - perhaps about a toy that gets left behind in a shop or else, perhaps, about a toy that is bought for a rich kid and it gets dropped in the street and the next morning - Christmas morning - it gets picked up by a poor child whose mother is a beggar and has no money for toys at Christmas. You could tell the story from the point of view of the toy - a doll or a teddy bear would be nice.

Message: | Sarah: Yes, I think that it does. That is the point of a story - soemthing happens - something that changes things, or changes people. A good story is one that holds our attention right through the actions, or happenings, and we find the ending satisfying. At least that is what I call a good story.

Message: | Kristine: I read somewhere that age is only relevant if you are very young, or very, very old. I think being fourteen allied to the quality of your writing may be an incentive to a publisher. However, don't build up your hopes - I know an editor who has only chosen one book in eighteen months - and the books that she is reading are sent in my agents, so they have already gone through one selection process. Aoibheann: If you liked the Famine, you might read 'Secret Spy' next as that has Martin in it.

Message: | Cora: In Summer you told me to try O'Brien Press in Dublin so I think I will try there first. The guide I found basically just gives you a sketch plan of what to write in each paragraph, its still basically me! I feel a little foolish saying I'm fourteen, it's making me think that they'll just think I'm some kid writing in to try and get something published, that's really not the impression I'm trying to give.

That's very enterprising of you to get a query letter from the Internet - though I'd be inclined to be yourself and write your own letter - your English is better than most adults!
