Message:Sarah: What about a Christmas story - perhaps about a toy that gets left behind in a shop or else, perhaps, about a toy that is bought for a rich kid and it gets dropped in the street and the next morning - Christmas morning - it gets picked up by a poor child whose mother is a beggar and has no money for toys at Christmas. You could tell the story from the point of view of the toy - a doll or a teddy bear would be nice.

Message:Sarah: Yes, I think that it does. That is the point of a story - soemthing happens - something that changes things, or changes people. A good story is one that holds our attention right through the actions, or happenings, and we find the ending satisfying.
At least that is what I call a good story.

Keep up the good work. Think yourself into each situation and try to imagine what Rainbow will be doing, saying, and, above all, feeling.

Message:Kristine: I read somewhere that age is only relevant if you are very young, or very, very old. I think being fourteen allied to the quality of your writing may be an incentive to a publisher. However, don't build up your hopes - I know an editor who has only chosen one book in eighteen months - and the books that she is reading are sent in my agents, so they have already gone through one selection process.

Aoibheann: If you liked the Famine, you might read 'Secret Spy' next as that has Martin in it.

Message:Cora: In Summer you told me to try O'Brien Press in Dublin so I think I will try there first. The guide I found basically just gives you a sketch plan of what to write in each paragraph, its still basically me! I feel a little foolish saying I'm fourteen, it's making me think that they'll just think I'm some kid writing in to try and get something published, that's really not the impression I'm trying to give.

Message:Sarah: Only sometimes, but not in the middle of winter, usually.

Kristine: Who are you thinking of approaching?
That's very enterprising of you to get a query letter from the Internet - though I'd be inclined to be yourself and write your own letter - your English is better than most adults!

Message:Cora: I've been thinking about it a lot over the past few months, and I might as well give it a shot. I have a query letter half-written and am pretty clueless as to what to say, but I've found an online guide that seems to be good.

Message:Kristine: Yes, I do think it's worth it, but I also know that you have to be very prepared for disappointment. The chances of it being accepted are probably almost like winning a lottery prize, but yes, I do think it has a chance and that if you don't do it you will always wonder whether you should have. Certainly, the book is long enough and the quality is better than a lot of published stuff, and your age would give it novelty value. Think about it!

Message:Cora: I don't know why, but I've been thinking about the stuff you said over the summer about "The Apprentice's Right" and was wondering whether you still thought I could do something with it, publishing-wise. For lack of a better term, I chickened out the last time, and I regret it now. Do you still think I could do something with it?
